I am very sorry to inform you that I have recently had a most unfortunate fall out with Mr. Cecil Humphreys of this firm, which renders it impossible for me to have any further personal intercourse with him, and he being the piece goods manager, the firm.

The cause of the trouble was certain allegations made by Mr. Cecil Humphreys to the effect that a couple of British firms and myself were trading with the enemy in Canton, and while I treated this untrue statement lightly and told Mr. Humphreys that such rumours were without foundation one of the firm in question on hearing about the accusation took more rigorous steps which resulted in an unreserved apology from Mr. Humphreys. Instead of leaving the unfortunate matter at this Mr. Humphreys how- ever selected to make me suffer for his humiliation and

refused to see me in his office.

I have hesitated to write you about this in the hope that after a while the whole matter would be cleared but

with a man of Mr. Humphreys temper it is hopeless to reason and I have had to abide by his decision. Under these cir- cumstances I find myself unable to follow up the business
